Thanksgiving is dead... ...and capitalism killed it. No, it wasn't eaten by Christmas. Christmas is the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ. No one has put aside feasting and family gatherings in favor of spending more time with Jesus Christ. What has happened is that businesses have extended their shopping hours more and more into the Thanksgiving holiday season, so that now we have people working on Thanksgiving. Yes, that is a bad thing. Thanksgiving is a holiday where we give thanks with our families for all the good that is going on in our lives. Many Americans are still in the midst of financial recession and are desperately in need of the morale boost. Yet, instead of looking beyond their bank books, American companies are denying us this family time. We're being told that shopping for gifts is WAAYYY more important than spending time with people that care about you. Thus we are forced to go back to our dead end jobs and soulless office spaces, so that we may continue our search for the all-too-elusive dollar. Nevermind that millions of Americans work at jobs that barely pay the bills anyway. Nevermind that millions of Americans have no jobs at all. Nevermind that family is the only GOOD thing that many Americans have left in this world. Don't think about any of that. Don't give thanks. Don't think. Just shop. Thanksgiving is dead. |
